What Is A Sibling Doula?

I think The VBAC Link says it best: "A sibling doula is a support person for your older kiddo or kiddos." A sibling doula understands birth and children, so they know how to best support your child(ren) while waiting to meet their new sibling. They know how to talk about birth and what to expect in a way that doesn't confuse your child(ren) or worry them.

Sibling Doula vs. Babysitter:

First, there's nothing wrong with hiring a babysitter to watch your child(ren) while you're in labor. If that's your preference, go for it, especially if it's a babysitter your child(ren) knows.

However, a sibling doula has a better understanding of everything that's happening. They know how to answer questions your child(ren) may have. They can offer helpful suggestions to involve them if you want. They know what birth looks like, so they won't be caught off guard by blood and yelling.

They also are comfortable with being on-call and leaving at a moment's notice.
