Pregnancy is a beautiful journey! But let’s be honest—it comes with its fair share of discomforts. One common issue that many expecting parents deal with is heartburn. That burning sensation in your chest that creeps up after you eat is the worst, but the good news is there are ways to manage it. But why does it happen, and how do you treat it?
Why Does Heartburn Happen During Pregnancy?
Heartburn, or acid reflux, occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation. During pregnancy, a couple of factors make this more likely:
1. Hormones: Pregnancy hormones like progesterone relax the valve between the esophagus and the stomach, making it easier for stomach acid to escape.
2. Growing Uterus: As your baby grows, your uterus expands and pushes against your stomach, which can force acid up into your esophagus.
Tips to Relieve Heartburn
1. Milk with Honey
The American Pregnancy Association recommends warm milk with a tablespoon of honey, which may decrease the acid that causes heartburn. The enzymes in honey help reduce inflammation.
2. Yogurt
Yogurt contains probiotics, which are good for gut health and help fight heartburn. Its cool, smooth texture provides soothing relief. The American Pregnancy Association also recommends yogurt.
3. Pineapples
Pineapples have digestive enzymes to help ease heartburn and aid in digestion if eaten after meals.
(Some people find that pineapple causes heartburn instead of relieving it, so you may not want to eat too much.
4. Ginger
Ginger reduces inflammation and prevents stomach acid from traveling up the esophagus. It also helps ease nausea. Drink real ginger ale or ginger tea (add honey if you like), or add fresh ginger to your food.
5. Almonds
Almonds have healthy oils and a lower acidity than other nuts, which helps neutralize stomach acid. Just a handful can make all the difference.
6. Peppermint
Try a glass of peppermint tea or sugar-free peppermint candies. It may also help relieve nausea and headaches.
7. Lemon water
It might sound strange since lemons are acidic, but they may help balance stomach acid and aid digestion. Try squeezing a few wedges (or about a tablespoon of juice) into a glass of water. Add honey for some extra sweetness.
8. Bananas
Bananas help lower the acidity levels in your stomach and esophagus. Bananas also have other benefits for pregnant women, such as boosting energy and stabilizing blood pressure.
9. Apple cider vinegar
Adding a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water can help balance stomach acid. It could even help treat UTIs and yeast infections, which pregnant women often experience.
10. Sugar-free gum
Chew sugar-free gum for at least half an hour after a meal to relieve heartburn. This produces more saliva, which neutralizes stomach acid.
When to Talk to Your Doctor
If your heartburn is severe or won’t go away, it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider. They can offer safe treatment options and ensure your symptoms aren’t due to another issue, giving you the support and care you need.
Heartburn might be an unwelcome companion during pregnancy, but with a few simple changes, you can keep it under control. Remember, every pregnancy is different—what works for one person might not work for another. Listen to your body, and don't hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider if you need additional support.
